From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Busch

(April 15, 1832 (Wiedensahl near Hannover) - January 9, 1908 (Mechtshausen)) was a German painter and poet who is known for his satirical picture stories.

After studying first mechanical engineering and then art in Düsseldorf, Antwerpen and Munich, he turned to drawing caricatures.

One of his first picture stories, Max and Moritz (published in 1865), was a huge success. Max and Moritz as well as many of his other picture stories are regarded as one of the main precursors of the modern comic strip.

Wilhelm Busch also wrote a number of poems in a similar style to his picture stories. Besides that he produced more than 1,000 oil paintings that weren't sold before his death in 1908. He was also active as a sculptor.

STREETS OF LONDON

Ralf McTell wrote this song in 1967 for a friend in Paris, who intended to commit suicide. In 1975 the song became a great hit.

Streets of London

1.

Have you seen the old man in the closed-down market,

kicking up the papers with his worn out shoes?

In his eyes you see no pride, hand held losely by his side.

Yesterdays papers telling yesterdays mind.

Refrain:

So how can you tell me you´re lonely,

don´t say for you the sun doesn´t shine?

Let me take you by the hand

and lead you through the streets of London.

I´ll show you something to make you change your mind.

2.

Have you seen the old girl who walks the streets of London,

dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?

She´s no time for talking , she just keeps right on walking.

Carrying her home in two carrier bags.

3.

In the allnight café, at a quarter past eleven,

same old man, sitting there on his own.

Looking at the world over the rim of his tea-cup.

Each tea lasts an hour, an he wanders home alone.

4.

Have you seen the old man outside the Seaman´s Mission,

memory, fading with the medal ribbons that he wears?

In our winter city the rain cries a little pity for

one more forgotten hero, and a world that doesn´t care.
